Over 30 Years of Experience In Helping Accident Victims

Despite the presence of bicycle lanes, accidents still occur

The number of bicycle lanes, specifically designed to accommodate bike travel in a number of metropolitan areas, has not seemed to make the streets safer for riders. In fact, the results of a study by the American College of Emergency Physicians seem to demonstrate that bicyclists often suffer even worse injuries with such lanes being in place.

While this does not necessarily demonstrate that bicycle lanes are bad, design flaws in these lanes may lead to increased risks. It's important to note that the bicycle lanes did not lead to increased injures when these lanes were isolated from motor vehicle traffic. And regardless of the presence of bicycle lanes, the behaviors of drivers and bicycle riders will likely continue leading to potential problems.

New York City appears to specifically be an area where the severity of injuries increased. It seems that "hot spots" exist in our area, and that barriers existing alongside exits of bridges and tunnels may be required to prevent further accidents from occurring.

While the issue of bicycle safety will require additional study, we can expect bicycle injuries to continue until officials come up with a better solution or drivers begin taking more care when driving in the presence of bicycles. Currently we have too many drivers using cellphones while driving through busy traffic, who drive too quickly through neighborhoods where bicycle riders and pedestrians are present, or who are under the influence of alcohol or drugs while driving.

At the Law Offices of Gary R. Weinberg, P.C., we see the consequences of such carelessness firsthand. Motor vehicle accidents leading to pedestrian and bicycle accidents result in spinal cord injuries, broken bones, head trauma and fatalities. And the treatment and care for victims and family members is extremely costly.
