Over 30 Years of Experience In Helping Accident Victims

Coming to terms with New York's drunk driving statistics

While New York has laws against driving a vehicle with a blood-alcohol content of above 0.08 percent, these laws have not prevented drunk driving accidents from occurring. Regardless of how harsh penalties for drunk driving already are, individuals continue to drink, drive and cause accidents.

Unsurprisingly, individuals driving drunk are placing everyone at risk and the cost of such accidents is extremely high. It's common for individuals suffering injuries in drunk driving accidents to experience temporary or permanent disability. Individuals injured in such accidents suffer broken bones, contusions, neck and back injuries (including paralysis), head trauma, and a large variety of other serious injuries.

Here are some sobering statistics. According to the New York State Department of Motor Vehicles, there were 7,849 alcohol-related motor vehicle accidents in 2014.

  • 3,974 resulted in personal injury
  • 270 of these crashes resulted in fatalities
  • 401 pedestrians were injured, and there were 71 pedestrian fatalities
  • 90 bicyclists were injured, and there were 11 bicyclist fatalities
  • 1,653 passengers were injured, and there were 47 passenger fatalities
  • 165 crashes also involved motorcycles

At the Law Offices of Gary R. Weinberg, P.C., we assist injury victims in drunk driving crashes, and we also understand the role attorneys play in helping individuals recover. Attorneys often help survivors of these crashes continue on with their daily lives by assisting victims and family members in recompensing losses due to medical bill, wage loss and other expenses.

Though it may be impossible to ever fully make up for what occurred, attorneys can at least prevent even greater suffering from occurring due to financial hardship or the inability to pay for one's care.
